In the wake of highly disturbing allegations against Neil Gaiman, Netflix has made the announcement this afternoon that their series “The Sandman” has been officially cancelled. The show will return for its second and final season later this year, the streamer announced.
Showrunner Allan Heinberg said in a statement, “The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season.”
“We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team all back together and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation in a way that we hope will surprise and delight the comics’ loyal readers as well as fans of our show,” the statement continues.
When last we left Dream (Tom Sturridge) and his friends and foes in Season 2, the forces of hell were on the move, led by Lucifer themself (Gwendoline Christie).
The final episodes of the series will dive into that conflict and continue to explore the many challenges facing the universe in the wake of Morpheus’ century-long absence.
Variety details, “The second season follows the “Season of Mists” storyline from Gaiman’s comics, in which Lucifer abdicates control of Hell and presents Morpheus, aka Dream, with the key to its gates, causing many immortals to try to convince Morpheus to give the key to them.”
