Mike Flanagan Recommends Gory Romantic Thriller on Hulu

Mike Flanagan Recommends Gory Romantic Thriller on Hulu

Do you ever feel like you can’t share your love for genre cinema with your skittish friends who don’t appreciate horror? Well, I may have a solution for you, a film that will satiate your appetite for the macabre without alienating your squeamish friends. Not to mention, the recommendation in question is a film favored by none other than genre cinema stalwart Mike Flanagan. The picture of which I so mysteriously speak is called Fresh.

I know that the Hush director is a fan of Fresh because he added the movie to a Letterboxd list featuring his favorite horror films. As for the flick’s status as an accessible genre piece, I have the receipts to back that up as well. Screenwriter Lauryn Kahn previously told THR that the film takes a less-is-more approach to onscreen violence. She went on to say that the flick is likely to appeal to fans of genre cinema and those less taken with horror fare as well.

    Fresh

Mimi Cave directed Fresh from Kahn’s screenplay. Fresh marks Cave’s directorial debut. She previously helmed a series of music videos and a number of shorts. Her next project is the upcoming Nicole Kidman thriller Holland. Fresh also marks Kahn’s first produced feature-length script. Not a bad showing from two first-time filmmakers, eh?

If you’re still on the fence, allow me to mention that Fresh is ‘certified fresh’ on Rotten Tomatoes with a critical approval rating of 82%! Moreover, the platform’s audience score sits at an equally impressive 81%.

The film stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Sebastian Stan, Jonica T. Gibbs, Charlotte Le Bon, Andrea Bang, Dayo Okeniyi, and Brett Dier.

Where is this Mike Flanagan-approved chiller available to stream?

If Mike Flanagan’s affinity for the film and the promise of a less-is-more approach to gore have you eager to seek the film out, you’re in luck. That’s right, Fresh is available to stream via Hulu as of the publication of this post.

The setup for this romance-tinged horror thriller goes as follows:

The horrors of modern dating are seen through the eyes of a young woman who is battling to survive her new boyfriend’s unusual appetites.

Well, that is absolutely everything that we have for you at present. Stay tuned to Dread Central for more exciting recommendations from your favorite filmmakers in the genre space as we succeed at unearthing them.
