Once again, it’s the most wonderful time of year. As the rest of the cinema world prepares for its season finale in the form of awards season, the Sundance Film Festival returns to announce its exciting premiere. This January, Utah will be sure to showcase a slew of exciting genre fare that will roll out through 2025.
Without fail, every year, the Sundance Film Festival brings horror fans some of the most interesting, scary, and downright best genre titles of the year. In 2024, the festival revealed that I Saw the TV Glow, It Lives Inside, In a Violent Nature, and Love Lies Bleeding. And in recent years, it has gifted us Talk to Me, Piggy, Fresh, Speak No Evil, and so much more.
Today, the festival unveils its slate of 2025 genre titles, and oh boy, does it look reliably mindblowing. Here’s what their iconic Midnight programme holds for you this January.
Dead Lover / Canada (Director, Screenwriter, and Producer: Grace Glowicki, Screenwriter and Producer: Ben Petrie, Producer: Yona Strauss) –– A lonely gravedigger who stinks of corpses finally meets her dream man, but their whirlwind affair is cut short when he tragically drowns at sea. Grief-stricken, she goes to morbid lengths to resurrect him through madcap scientific experiments, resulting in grave consequences and unlikely love. Didn’t Die / U.S.A. Opus / U.S.A. (Director, Screenwriter, and Producer: Mark Anthony Green, Producers: Collin Creighton, Brad Weston, Poppy Hanks, Jelani Johnson, Josh Bachove) –– A young writer is invited to the remote compound of a legendary pop star who mysteriously disappeared 30 years ago. Surrounded by the star’s cult of sycophants and intoxicated journalists, she finds herself in the middle of his twisted plan. Together / Australia, U.S.A. The Ugly Stepsister / Norway (Director and Screenwriter: Emilie Blichfeldt, Producer: Maria Ekerhovd) –– In a fairy-tale kingdom where beauty is a brutal business, Elvira battles to compete with her incredibly beautiful stepsister, and she will go to any length to catch the prince’s eye. Beginning January 30, more than half the feature program will be available online for audiences nationwide to watch from home at festival.sundance.org. The curated online program will include all competition titles (U.S. Dramatic, U.S. Documentary, World Cinema Dramatic, World Cinema Documentary, and NEXT presented by Adobe), as well as additional selections from the feature, episodic, and Short Film Program presented by Vimeo.
