Photo credit: Marcel Zyskind While no-budget splatter-house fairytale reboots like Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, Cinderella’s Curse, and Neverland Nightmare continue to carve out a profitable mini-industry of uninspired schlock, it’s all the more refreshing to encounter an expertly crafted, thoughtfully executed fairytale nightmare-comedy like Emilie Blichfeldt’s The Ugly Stepsister.Set in a fantastical alternate 1900s, The Ugly Stepsister shifts the spotlight to the familiar secondary character of Elvira—but at a steep cost. Desperate to stand out at a once-in-a-lifetime ball with Prince Charming, Elvira (Lea Myren) endures a series of ghastly, historically-inspired surgical cosmetic procedures and punishing rounds of…
Most charming of all is that the film looks great. The lighting is colourful, visually matching the kind of new queer horror appearance showcased best in recent works by Alice Maio Mackay and Jane Schroenbrun. I can definitely see myself rewatching and I’m excited to see what the filmmakers do next. IntroductioneVil Sublet emerges as a thought-provoking and entertaining addition, brilliantly blending dark satire with genuine emotional depth. Directed by Allan Parker and featuring a diverse cast led by Jennifer Leigh Houston, this film explores the chilling realities of the American housing crisis through a uniquely paranormal lens. Set against the…

It’s a yearly refrain where we all lament how much the big awards shows ignore horror and its inherent artistry. But, this year, it seems that horror is finally getting its flowers at the Academy Awards this year, with four genre titles securing nominations, and two of those titles sweeping in several categories. Maybe we’ll see a horror film take home an Oscar this year! Of course, Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance dominated with five total Oscar nominations, including one for Best Picture. Everything in the world right now seems dire and scary, but seeing a female-directed body-horror film receive a…

Those toothy B-movies that cut straight to the bone with bonkers gore and incredulously conceived sharks—ghost sharks and Christmas sharks galore!
