The Dead by Daylight universe is continuing to expand, but at least one long-planned project has been scrapped. The shooter spin-off in the video game franchise known only as Project T has officially been canceled. The news was made official by publisher Behaviour Interactive, with the company letting fans know via a post on the game’s Steam page.
Earlier this year, Behaviour had opened up an insider program, allowing certain fans to get hands-on experience with Project T, which has been in the works for well over a year. We got our best look yet at the game during the Dead by Daylight 8th-anniversary livestream in May. Unfortunately, it seems like those player tests didn’t go particularly well. Here’s the message that was posted by Behaviour to players:
“When we conceptualized this project, we wanted to have players involved in it as early as possible, which led to the creation of this Insiders Program. This approach has allowed us to get very early validation on Project T’s core design and gameplay, which is something that often comes much further into the production of a game. Following the playtest in July, we ran a thorough internal risk assessment from both a product and commercial perspective. While a number of you expressed appreciation for what you played, unfortunately, the outcome of this deep analysis yielded unsatisfactory overall results.
It’s with a heavy heart that we announce that Project T has been canceled. We want to thank you for your support throughout this journey.”
The game was going to be a PvE shooter, sort of like Destiny 2 or Overwatch 2. In Project T, players would have taken on the role of Trespassers who were whisked away from their realities and trapped within The Entity’s Realm. Once there, in an ever-changing region called The Backwater, they must work together to survive. Players would battle horrific monstrosities known as The Thrall.
On the one hand, this is a bummer. On the other hand, it’s better for Behaviour to realize this now, rather than release a bad game out into the world after even more development. Even without this, the DbD universe is healthy. The main game is still going strong, and Blumhouse is also currently developing a film based on Dead by Daylight. Plus, two other new games were released this year in the form of What the Fog and the single-player The Casting of Frank Stone. So there is much to look forward to.
Dead by Daylight is available for console and PC. For more, check out Fango’s thoughts on The Casting of Frank Stone, which is also out now for both console and PC.
