Good news, horror gamers: a Death Note video game could be right around the corner, with Gematsu reporting today that the Taiwan Digital Game Rating Committee have officially rated an unannounced Death Note game for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 via Bandai Namco.
Gematsu report that the title, translated from Traditional Chinese, reads as Death Note: Shadow Mission, but that it’s more likely the official English title will be Death Note: Killer Within, as this name was trademarked by Shueisha Games (the gaming arm of Death Note’s publishing house) earlier this year.
Spanning decades and various mediums (including a long-running anime, live action movies and an upcoming live action Netflix series adaptation from Stranger Things‘ The Duffer Brothers), Death Note is one of Japan’s most famous horror-tinged supernatural manga stories of all time, following a high-school student named Light Yagami who comes across the titular notebook, previously owned by a dark deity named Ryuk, that can kill anyone whose name is written in its pages.
While Death Note has been adapted into game before, with Death Note: Kira Game and three sequels being released for the Nintendo DS in 2007 and 2008, if the rumored PlayStation game is to go ahead, it will be a first for the iconic series, written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata, in this particular format.
While this rating is in no way an official confirmation, past news on gaming ratings (for example, the Silent Hill 2 remake’s Korean rating) sometimes suggest a release is imminent. Fingers crossed, and we’ll bring you the news as it rolls in!
