In early 2021, The Weeknd set the interwebs aflame when he debuted a seemingly whole new face for his “Save Your Tears” music video. This was right after appearing at the 2020 VMAs and American Music Awards, bandaged, with bruised eyes (we love a solid commitment to building the narrative!) The extreme plastic surgery was, of course, fake, and eerily convincing thanks to the work of Academy Award-nominated makeup artist Mike Marino and the ProRen FX team.
The “Save Your Tears” music video centers on a lounge singer, unhinged. Botox and fillers bloating and stretching the face to unnatural proportions, accompanied by an unnatural chisel, making the look, as a whole— extraordinarily strange. We ourselves are fans of the strange and unusual, and this certainly fits the bill. We are celebrating the ongoing Marino/Weeknd collaboration on our latest cover, go behind the scenes with Mike Marino in the upcoming summer issue of FANGORIA. Subscribe here.
