The Latest Trends in the Horror Industry
The horror genre continues to evolve, captivating audiences with innovative storytelling and spine-chilling experiences. Here are some of the latest trends and releases making waves in the horror industry:
Found footage films remain a popular subgenre, with 2024 seeing numerous new entries. Notable releases include “Invoking Yell” by Patricio Valladares, exploring the eerie world of Chile’s only all-female black metal band, and “Milk & Serial” by Curry Baker, a viral sensation on YouTube delving into the sinister side of influencer culture.
2024 has also been a fantastic year for hidden horror gems. Films like “MadS” by David Moreau, a one-take zombie film, and “The Becomers” by Zach Clark, a body-swapping alien romance, have garnered critical acclaim for their unique approaches and compelling narratives.
The V/H/S/Beyond franchise took a sci-fi turn this year, with segments directed by Kate Siegel, Justin Long, and others. The anthology features impressive special effects and a segment about a woman chasing UFOs, showcasing the genre’s willingness to experiment with new themes and technologies.
Queer filmmakers are pushing boundaries and bringing fresh perspectives to the genre. “Departing Seniors” by Clare Cooney is a standout, following a queer high school senior with psychic powers who sets out to solve a series of murders.
One of the most talked-about films of the year is an extreme body horror film causing walkouts in cinemas worldwide. This film pushes the limits of gore and body transformation, leaving audiences both horrified and fascinated.
The horror industry is also seeing a resurgence of classic titles. “Re-Animator” is getting a 4K release, and there’s excitement around the upcoming sequel “28 Years Later”. Additionally, “Nosferatu” is being reimagined by Robert Eggers, blending classic horror with modern sensibilities.
Streaming platforms continue to be a haven for horror enthusiasts. Shudder’s original programming, including “MadS”, has been particularly well-received, offering a mix of new and classic horror films to a global audience.
