First Teaser for ‘The Wedding Banquet’ Wonderful Ensemble Comedy

“It’s for the cause! We’re helping a gay couple stay together.” Bleecker Street has unveiled the teaser for the ensemble comedy called The Wedding Banquet, a brand new modern day remake of the 1993 Ang Lee movie. This teaser is debuting the day after the film’s world premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival – where it earned a standing ovation after its premiere at Eccles (and I was there – it was amazing!!). This time the story features four people living together: two gay men and two lesbian women in relationships. Korean Min makes a deal with his lesbian friend: a green-card marriage for him, in exchange for IVF treatments for her. But their plans to quietly elope are upended when Min’s skeptical grandmother flies in right from Korea unannounced, insisting on an all-out wedding extravaganza. With a pitch-perfect cast of talent that includes Bowen Yang, Lily Gladstone, Kelly Marie Tran, Han Gi-chan, Bobo Le, Joan Chen, and Academy Award winner Youn Yuh-jung, this fresh reimagining of Ang Lee’s beloved, rom-com teems with humor & heart in a poignant reminder that being part of a family means learning to both accept & forgive. I watched this film at Sundance and instantly fell in love with it – this should be a major hit when it opens this spring.

An exuberant modern update on Ang Lee’s 1993 romantic comedy film of the same name. Frustrated with his commitment-phobic boyfriend, Chris, and out of time, Min makes a proposal: a green card marriage with his friend Angela in exchange for expensive in vitro fertilization treatments for her partner, Lee. Plans change when Min’s grandma arrives & surprises them with an elaborate Korean wedding banquet. The Wedding Banquet (2025) is directed by acclaimed queer Korean American filmmaker Andrew Ahn, director of the films Spa Night, Driveways, and Fire Island previously. The screenplay is written by Andrew Ahn and James Schamus. Produced by Anita Gou, Joe Pirro, Caroline Clark, and James Schamus. This just premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival this month. Bleecker Street will debut Ahn’s The Wedding Banquet film in select US theaters starting April 18th, 2025 coming up this spring. Who wants to watch?
