The Realism in Daydreamers: A Horror Film That Feels Too Close for Comfort

Horror films often thrive on the supernatural, the grotesque, and the surreal. But every once in a while, a film emerges that blurs the line between fiction and reality, making audiences question whether the horrors on screen could exist in their own world. Daydreamers (2025), directed by Timothy Linh Bui, is one such film—a vampire epic that intertwines myth with realism, creating an unsettling yet mesmerizing experience2.

    A World That Feels Lived-In

One of the most striking aspects of Daydreamers is its commitment to realism in world-building. Unlike many vampire films that rely on exaggerated gothic aesthetics, Daydreamers leans into a neon-lit urban landscape that feels tangible and immersive. The cinematography by Phu Nam captures the gritty, lived-in feel of the city, making the supernatural elements seem like a natural extension of the environment rather than an intrusion.

    Cultural Authenticity

Rather than rehashing Western vampire tropes, Daydreamers grounds its horror in Vietnamese mythology and culture. This approach not only adds depth to the film’s lore but also makes the story feel more authentic. The all-Vietnamese cast further enhances this realism, delivering performances that feel emotionally raw and genuine1. Chi Pu, in particular, shines as Trieu, bringing a level of intensity and vulnerability that makes her character’s struggles feel real.

    Psychological Horror Over Jump Scares

While Daydreamers has its fair share of action and suspense, its horror is rooted in psychological realism. The film explores themes of power, morality, and the consequences of immortality, making the vampires feel less like monsters and more like tragic figures. The flashbacks interwoven throughout the narrative add layers to the characters’ relationships, making their conflicts feel deeply personal and emotionally charged2.

    Realistic Special Effects and Makeup

Another element that enhances the film’s realism is its practical effects and makeup. The special FX makeup by Kim B strikes a balance between sinister and beautiful, ensuring that the vampires look both terrifying and believable. The film avoids excessive CGI, opting instead for practical effects that make the horror feel more grounded.

    KO’s Thoughts

Daydreamers is a rare horror film that successfully blends supernatural horror with realism. Its immersive world-building, cultural authenticity, psychological depth, and practical effects make it a standout entry in the vampire genre. By making its horrors feel eerily plausible, Daydreamers ensures that its audience won’t just be scared while watching—but will continue to feel its unsettling presence long after the credits roll.
