As X continues to die a slow and painful death, many of the site’s most prolific users have fled to competing platforms. Stephen King, one of X’s most visible users, has jumped ship to Threads, where he reliably shares a compelling mixture of dad jokes, political hot takes, and movie recommendations. The dad jokes and hot takes don’t usually fall under our purview. However, King’s streaming suggestions are very much within our wheelhouse. Speaking of which, I have one queued up for you right now.

King recently posted: “Companion: A totally fine horror/science fiction movie. (Also pretty funny.) I wish I’d seen it in the theaters, but watched it on Amazon Prime. Try it.”

The setup for Companion goes like this: A weekend getaway at a remote cabin turns to chaos when it’s revealed that one of the guests—a subservient android built for human companionship—has gone haywire.

King rented the flick from Prime Video before it was available to stream for free elsewhere. Lucky for Max subscribers, Companion is now available via the HBO-owned platform.

I saw someone on social media mention that the plot synopsis on Max contains a major spoiler. I haven’t had the chance to check Companion out for myself yet, but I have also steered clear of the possibly spoiler-laden plot crunch on Max. The one I’ve included below comes from Google Movies and keeps matters pretty vague. However, if you’re still iffy, just jump to the next paragraph.

    The nuts and bolts:

Sophie Thatcher, Jack Quaid, Megan Suri, Lukas Gage, Harvey Guillén, and Rupert Friend topline the cast. Drew Hancock takes the sole screenwriting and directing credit on this techno-thriller.

Hancock made the film for an estimated budget of $10 million, and it pulled in slightly over $36 million at the global box office. Not such a bad return, especially considering Companion is now racking up the streams on Max.

There you have it. Stephen King is a fan of Companion and even wishes he could have experienced it on the big screen. If you’re game to see why the film stood out to the Misery author, make your way over to Max and see what you think. If you feel compelled to keep up with me on Threads, you can find me over there as @FunWithHorror.
