A series adaptation of Robert McCammon’s bestselling post-apocalyptic novel, Swan Song, is in the works, and Variety reports this morning that it’s found its showrunner in “Foundation” producer Russell Rothberg.
Rothberg will serve as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. The Swan Song showrunner is no stranger to genre TV, either, having previously developed the Psycho-inspired series “Bates Motel” for A&E.
In Swan Song, “following the U.S. government’s nuclear showdown with an unprecedented malevolent enemy, America as it was is gone forever. Now, the remaining citizens must fight to stay alive in a wasteland born of rage and fear, populated by monstrous creatures and marauding armies.”
Longtime “The Walking Dead” executive producer/director and “Creepshow” showrunner Greg Nicotero is attached to direct the pilot and will executive produce along with Brian Witten from Monster Agency Productions. Steve Barnett, Alan Powell, and Vicky Patel will executive produce through Monarch Media, along with McCammon. Brandi Hagedorn will co-produce.
McCammon’s Swan Song was initially published in 1987 and won a Bram Stoker Award for Best Novel in 1987, along with Stephen King’s Misery. It follows Earth’s last survivors as they’re drawn into an ultimate battle between good and evil to decide the fate of humanity. But an ancient force behind the apocalypse seeks out new recruits to build a relentless army. It’s a world of marauders and monstrous creatures after the world has been decimated by nuclear attack.
This marks the second novel by McCammon to inspire a horror television series. Peacock previously adapted the now-canceled “Teacup,” an adaptation of the author’s sprawling action-horror novel Stinger.
