Stephen King Calls New Streaming Series “A brilliant reimagining”

    Stephen King, The Midwich Cuckoos

If you’re missing Stephen King’s quips, commentary, and media recommendations on Twitter, miss no more. The bestselling author has pivoted his focus to Threads. He still serves up his signature snark and makes time to share what he’s watching. So, it’s just like his Twitter profile, but without all of the baggage that one unhinged billionaire brought to the platform following a recent acquisition.

On the subject of media recommendations, King recently posted about a streaming series he’s been watching and the author is quite taken. The author’s post reads: “The Midwich Cuckoos (Amazon): Surprised there hasn’t been more talk about this. It’s a brilliant re-imagining of John Wyndham’s classic sci-fi/horror novel.”

King mentions that he’s surprised more people aren’t talking about the program. I have to wonder if that may have to do with the series’ title. It’s taken from the John Wyndham novel upon which it is based. But the two previous screen renderings went under the title Village of the Damned. I’m all for sticking to the source material. However, I think the films have more name recognition with the average consumer than the novel.

While King is an enthusiastic fan of the series, critics have been divided. That much is evident in the Rotten Tomatoes critics’ consensus, which reads: “This adaptation of John Wyndham’s classic novel is often cuckoo in an off-putting way and overstays its welcome with a bloated runtime, but it holds some diabolical delights for viewers who enjoy a science-fiction nightmare.”

David Farr is behind this latest adaptation of the source material. He created the series for the British television channel Sky Max. Farr may be best known for writing the screenplay for the 2011 action film Hannah.

Although King’s post says the series is available on Amazon, it’s actually on AMC+ at present. If you’re not already a subscriber, the service is currently offering a free trial for new subscribers.

The setup for The Midwich Cuckoos goes like this:

A supernatural event overcomes the quiet village of Midwich and leaves its residents unconscious. Upon waking, they discover that numerous women are pregnant, setting off a desperate search for the truth.

That’s all we have for you at present. Stay tuned to the site in the near future for more exciting recommendations from your favorite creators in the genre space. If you’d like to discuss the merits of The Midwich Cuckoos, you can find me on Threads @FunWithHorror.
