“I bow before you…” The masterpiece returns to the big screen! GKids has revealed a brand new IMAX re-release trailer for Princess Mononoke, celebrating the iconic 40th anniversary of Studio Ghibli. First released in 1997, the film set huge box office records in Japan and was the first Ghibli movie to be released in the US with an English dub (in 1998) though it didn’t do very well at the time. The new 4K restoration of the film will be shown in both original Japanese language with subtitles & English dubbed versions in IMAX theaters later this month. Set in the Muromachi period, the story follows Ashitaka, a young Emishi prince who journeys west to cure his cursed arm and becomes embroiled in the conflict between Irontown and the forest of the gods, as well as the feud between Lady Eboshi and a human girl raised by wolves named San. With a score by renowned composer Joe Hisaishi. The original Japanese voice cast features Yōji Matsuda as Ashitaka, Yuriko Ishida as San, Yūko Tanaka as Lady Eboshi, and Kaoru Kobayashi as Jigo. The film currently has a 93% rating on RT, though I think the 4.4 average on Letterboxd more accurately shows how beloved this movie is and will always be. Nothing like experiencing it on IMAX – don’t miss this chance.
New IMAX re-release trailer (+ poster) for Hayao Miyazaki’s classic Princess Mononoke, from YouTube:
From the legendary Studio Ghibli, also creators of Spirited Away, and Academy Award-winning director Hayao Miyazaki, comes an epic masterpiece that has dazzled audiences worldwide with its breathtaking imagination, exhilarating battles, and deep humanity. Inflicted with a deadly curse, the young warrior Ashitaka heads west in search of a cure. There, he stumbles into a bitter conflict between Lady Eboshi, the proud people of Iron Town, and the enigmatic Princess Mononoke, a young girl raised by wolves, who will stop at nothing to prevent the humans from destroying her home and the forest spirits and animal gods who live there. Princess Mononoke is written and directed by the legendary Japanese animation filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, his seventh feature film at the time following Porco Rosso (1992) and just before making Spirited Away (2001). It’s produced by Toshio Suzuki and made by Studio Ghibli. Princess Mononoke first opened in Japan in July 1997. The IMAX version of the film was created from a new 4K restoration directly overseen by Studio Ghibli’s own Atsushi Okui, who has been involved in nearly every major Studio Ghibli project since he first started at the studio in 1993. GKids will re-release Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke in 4K in IMAX theaters (US & Canada only) starting March 26th, 2025. For info + tickets visit their official site.
